Use Cases

The HB subfamily of VM size series are one of Azure's high-performance computing (HPC) optimized H-family VM instances. They are designed for compute-intensive workloads, such as computational fluid dynamics, finite element analysis, and large-scale scientific simulations. High-performance AMD EPYC processors and fast memory on HB-series VMs offer exceptional CPU and memory bandwidth, making them ideal for applications that require extensive computational resources to perform large-scale calculations and data processing. This makes them well suited for industries like engineering, scientific research, and data analysis where processing speed and accuracy are critical for productivity and innovation.

HBv3 Series

Features

  • The HBv3-series VMs are designed for high-performance computing (HPC) applications such as fluid dynamics, finite element analysis, weather modeling, seismic processing, reservoir simulation, and RTL simulation. These VMs feature up to 120 AMD EPYC™ 7V73X (Milan-X) CPU cores and 448 GB of RAM, with up to 96 MB of L3 cache per core and clock frequencies reaching 3.5 GHz. They deliver impressive memory bandwidth of up to 350 GB/sec, which can be amplified to 630 GB/sec, and offer up to 7 GB/sec in SSD performance

  • HBv3-series VMs are equipped with 200 Gb/sec HDR InfiniBand from NVIDIA Networking, ensuring supercomputer-scale MPI workloads with a non-blocking fat tree network design. They support advanced networking features including Adaptive Routing and Dynamic Connected Transport (DCT), in addition to standard RC and UD transports

  • The storage configuration includes one 480 GiB temp disk, two NVMe disks totaling 960 GiB, and access to 32 additional remote disks. Networking capabilities are provided by eight NICs, with no accelerators included. These VMs are strongly recommended for applications that require high computational power and extensive memory bandwidth.
